Shipping Details:

Once your order is shipped, you’ll receive an email with a tracking number and estimated delivery date. Most orders ship immediately, but some items are seasonal and may only ship in spring or fall. These products are noted on the website.

The deep, violet-blue shade of the flowers of the Azurri Blue Satin® Rose of Sharon Althea Tree, Hibiscus syriacus 'Marina,' is uncommon among Rose of Sharon cultivars and ensures that this hardy bush will make a statement in any garden it graces. The flowers are large—up to three inches in diameter—with a center splash of deep red and prominent white stamens. Even better, the flowers bloom from mid-summer to fall; so, you'll have vibrant color in your garden for much of the summer.

The Azurri Blue Satin® may look like a diva, but it is easy to care for and tolerant of a wide range of soil types. Once established, it has some drought resistance, and it needs only light pruning in spring to stay in shape. Here are a few other reasons to bring this tree to your yard:

  • Deer resistant and resistant to disease as well.
  • Can be grown in a container.
  • An excellent choice for the back of mixed shrub borders.

Planting instructions

Site your Rose of Sharon Althea Tree in soil that drains well and receives at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. Unpot the tree and tease out any encircling roots, which can girdle the tree and slowly kill it. Dig a hole that’s as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. Place the tree in the hole, spreading out the roots fully. Holding it upright and steady, fill in around the roots with topsoil, tamping down as you go to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly. Apply a two to three-inch layer of organic mulch such as bark chips around the root zone to conserve moisture and hinder weed growth but keep it from touching the trunk, which can encourage rot.

Watering and nutrients

Water a newly-planted tree a few times a week until you see robust new growth on the branches. Then, cut back to watering once-a-week, giving your tree about an inch of water each time. A good way to see if the tree needs water is to check the soil two inches below the surface—if it’s dry there, give your tree a drink. Fertilize your Azurri Blue Satin® in early spring with a balanced, slow-release product designed for flowering trees and shrubs.

Pollination

Although the Azurri Blue Satin® Rose of Sharon Althea Tree may attract pollinating insects or birds such as hummingbirds, it is a sterile cultivar that does not set seed.

Pruning

Remove dead, damaged or diseased branches whenever you see them. In spring, prune back flowering branches to a few buds for larger flowers. You should also prune out any secondary trunks or suckers that appear around the base of the plant unless you wish your Rose of Sharon to grow to a bush form rather than a tree form.

Pests and diseases

Pests that may appear on your Azurri Blue Satin® Tree include whiteflies, aphids and Japanese beetles. You should be able to find traps for the latter at any garden store. Consider releasing beneficial insects such as ladybugs and lacewings to fight infestations and keep insecticides as a last resort. Diseases include leaf spots, blight and canker. One way to minimize fungal infections is to always water at the base of the trunk and keep the area around the root zone free of leaf litter or other debris.

Achieving maximum results

It’s possible to grow your Azurri Blue Satin® Rose of Sharon Althea Tree in a container, and it’s no more difficult than growing it in the ground. This allows you to use this versatile small tree on patios or decks or even flanking a front door. Choose a container that has good drainage holes in the bottom and is about twice the size of the root ball. Plant your tree as per our directions above, using good-quality potting soil. Note that container-grown plantings tend to need more frequent watering as well as regular applications of fertilizer.

FAQs

How big does the Azurri Blue Satin® Rose of Sharon get?

This is a fairly petite tree, with a maximum height of 8 to 10 feet, and a mature width of four to six feet. Its smaller stature makes it an ideal planting for small urban lots or gardens where space is limited. If planting near a building, space it at least three or four feet away from the structure to allow for growth.

Can I grow the Azurri Blue Satin® as a shrub?

Yes, you can. Instead of pruning out all secondary trunks, leave four or five to grow up alongside the central trunk. These should allow it to form a vertically-oriented shrub rather than a standalone tree.

How is the Azurri Blue Satin® best used in my landscape?

This lovely flowering tree or shrub can easily serve as a specimen planting, especially when planted in mass. A row of them would make an attractive windbreak or privacy screen next to an outdoor patio, and it is very effective when used near the back of a mixed shrub and perennial bed.
