How to Grow Conifer Trees
Many conifer trees are able to survive in extremely cold temperatures. But if you are planting one, do so when the soil is still somewhat warm. This will help the roots of your conifer tree adapt to the new growing location.
Choose an area where the soil has great drainage and is slightly acidic. This area should receive plenty of sunlight. For most conifer tree species, an area of full sun is the best location. However, if you live in a hot climate, some afternoon shade may be beneficial.
How to Plant Conifer Trees
- When. Plant your conifer trees in early fall. This gives the roots time to adjust in soil that is still slightly warm.
- Where. Choose an area that has good soil drainage and about six to eight hours of sunlight per day.
- How. Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball of the tree. Make sure that the root flare remains exposed above the soil. Backfill the hole and soak the roots with water to help them overcome transplant shock.
How to Care for Conifer Trees
- Watering. Water your Conifer tree regularly during its first year. After that, their water needs will diminish.
- Nutrients. These trees are fairly low maintenance when it comes to soil nutrients. Apply a yearly application of a 10-10-10 fertilizer.
- Pruning. Conifers cannot produce new growth on old wood. That means that excessive pruning can be disastrous for these trees. Prune when the tree is dormant and focus on removing any dead branches. Any thinning you do to living foliage should be moderate.
- Pollination. The cones of most conifer trees contain both the male and female reproductive organs. Conifers produce copious amounts of pollen that travels via wind. Those two facts make pollination an easy chore.
- Harvesting. Conifers are not known for their fruit productions. However, many species have several edible parts, such as their needles. These edible portions are present during most of the year.
