Dwarf Ixora, also known by the scientific name Ixora taiwanensis, is a small evergreen shrub that is exceptionally popular in warm weather states like Florida. You should plant your dwarf Ixora plant in an area that receives full sun or partial sunlight each day. The soil should have good drainage and have a low ph value. At the time of planting, it can be beneficial to add a soil amendment, to increase the amount of organic matter that reaches the roots of this plant.

Container planting is an option for dwarf Ixora plants, but if you choose this route, you will need to be wary of root binding and finding a container with adequate drainage. When planting multiple dwarf Ixora plants, such as for a hedge planting, their compact size makes it so you can plant them as close as two feet apart.

Watering and nutrients

The soil in which a dwarf Ixora plant grows should remain relatively moist at all times. You should not water this plant to the point where the soil is excessively wet. What you want to do is wait for the top layer of soil to become a bit dry, then add water.

Dwarf Ixora also does well with regular fertilization. Try adding a granular fertilizer once in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. The best fertilizer to use is one that is acidic and has a good amount of potassium.

Pruning

Pruning for dwarf Ixora plants should take place in the early spring and should be somewhat minimal. This species can take a while to recover from pruning cuts, so over-pruning can cause this plant to decline.

A moderate-early spring pruning will encourage the plant to bloom. You can also choose to shear this plant to maintain a specific shape. However, if you do this, you run the risk of removing many of the flower buds, decreasing the overall effect of the bloom.

Pests, diseases, and animals

As you raise your dwarf Ixora plant, you will notice several pests and diseases that can arise. Most often, aphids will be the pest that lives on this plant. Dwarf Ixora plants can also run into problems with mealybugs and scale insects.

Beyond pests, dwarf Ixora plants have other common ailments you should look out for. Sooty mold and black fungus can both be an issue. Often, those two afflictions follow the presence of an insect infestation.

Achieving maximum results

Occasionally, you might notice that the leaves of your dwarf Ixora plant are becoming yellow. When that happens, you can be sure that it is due to the soil’s pH level being too high. Remedy this by adding an acidic fertilizer.

Regular fertilization and an acidic pH are also beneficial to the blooms of this plant. By keeping up with a schedule that includes multiple fertilizations each year, you are doing your part to promote the best possible blooms each year.
