Planting instructions
Site your Earth Angel Hibiscus in soil that drains well and receives at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. Unpot your plant and tease out any encircling roots, which can girdle the shrub and slowly kill it. Dig a hole that’s as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. Place the shrub in the hole, spreading out the roots. Holding it upright and steady, fill in around the roots with topsoil that’s been amended with well-rotted compost or manure, tamping down as you go to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly. Apply a two to three-inch layer of organic mulch such as bark chips around the root zone to conserve moisture and hinder weed growth but keep it from touching the trunk to avoid problems with rot.
Watering and nutrients
These hibiscus shrubs need regular watering. When first planted, water every other day unless it is hot out, in which case they will need a daily drink. Once established, monitor the soil. It should remain about as damp as a wrung-out sponge. Water whenever the soil dries out. Feed your Earth Angel Hibiscus in the spring with a slow-release product. Look for either a balanced formula, such as a 10-10-10, or a low-phosphorus fertilizer, such as a 12-6-8. Do not use “bloom booster” formulas on these plants.
Pollination
Hibiscus plants, with their bold, colorful flowers, are pollinator magnets for bees and butterflies. As a hybrid, however, the Earth Angel is propagated more commonly through grafting or rooting stems.
Pruning
If you are growing your Earth Angel Hibiscus outdoors, you may prune it back to about six to eight inches after the growing season is over. You may also selectively prune branches to control the height of the shrub. Prune out any dead, diseased or damaged branches whenever you see them
Pests and diseases
The Earth Angel Hibiscus isn’t bothered by diseases or pests in any significant way. If grown outdoors, pest problems are few. If they are container-grown indoors, monitor your plants for typical household pests such as spider mites and aphids. Wiping the leaves regularly with a damp cloth can help prevent infestation; use insecticidal soap if necessary.
Achieving maximum results
Many hibiscus varieties are best suited to tropical or semi-tropical conditions. The Earth Angel is hardy down to 30 degrees Fahrenheit but will thrive best in temperatures that are warmer than that. Because of this, northern growers will want to plant it in a container that can be brought indoors during the winter. Choose a pot that is about twice the size of your plant’s root ball, with good drainage holes in the bottom. Use a good-quality general-purpose potting mix and follow our directions above for planting outdoors. When the nighttime temperatures are consistently below 65 degrees, bring the plant indoors and place it by a sunny window for the winter. You can cut back somewhat on watering, but the plant will appreciate a regular misting of the leaves.

Where can the Earth Angel be grown outdoors?
This lovely hibiscus grows well outside in USDA hardiness zones 9 through 11. That includes most of Florida, parts of Texas and Louisiana, and coastal regions of California. Gardeners who live north of these areas will find that the Earth Angel grows very well in a container and should be brought inside when the temperatures start to cool off.
How is the Earth Angel Hibiscus best used in my landscape?
When grown in a container, the Earth Angel makes an excellent accent plant on a patio or near a pool. Two of them flanking a front entrance would be attractive, as well. Since they flower through three seasons, they would work well anywhere in a perennial bed that needs a pop of light color and brightness—consider planting one in front of a darker, taller conifer bush to highlight the flowers.
Do these plants need deadheading when the flowers are spent?
Hibiscus plants don't require deadheading in order to produce further blooms. The spent flowers will drop off naturally and can be swept up. Having said that, if you wish to deadhead them for aesthetic purposes, it won't harm the plant.
