Planting instructions

When planting a Fuyu persimmon tree, you’ll need to find an area that has plenty of sunlight. Full sun conditions are what allow this species to produce the best quality fruit. Soil drainage is also crucial for Fuyu persimmon trees. Although this plant likes plenty of water, it does not enjoy sitting in stagnant water. As such, a sandy loam is often ideal. Once you find a setting that meets those conditions, you can begin planting by digging a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball and as deep as the root ball is high.

Watering and nutrients

During the growing season, give your Fuyu persimmon tree water about once or twice per week. While these trees can tolerate moderate droughts at maturity, moist soil is more suitable for fruit production.

A fertilizer that contains equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium should encourage healthy growth in a Fuyu persimmon tree. It’s best to give fertilizer about three times per growing season. After a few years, you can reduce fertilization to about twice per growing season.

Pollination

One of the most convenient aspects of the Fuyu persimmon tree is that these trees are self-pollinating, meaning that you won’t need an additional tree to produce fruit. However, there are some advantages to planting multiple Fuyu persimmon trees.

With multiple trees, it is likely that you will experience larger harvests consisting of better-tasting fruits. Fuyu persimmon trees typically rely on pollinator insect species such as bees to carry their pollen from one flower to another.

Pruning

When the tree is young, you should prune so that there are around four or five main branches connecting to the trunk. Doing so encourages your tree to develop a strong structure as it grows.

You should also perform annual pruning during the late winter to remove any part of the tree that is damaged or shows signs of disease. You should also be wary of the weight of this tree’s fruit. At times, you’ll need to remove fruit to prevent its weight from breaking the branches of your tree.

Pest, diseases, and animals

Like many fruit-producing trees, a Fuyu persimmon tree can have problems with pests and diseases. Persimmon phylloxera is one such insect you’ll need to watch out for. These insects feast on persimmon tree foliage, which can cause leaf deformities and interfere with the tree’s overall growth.

Other insects such as persimmon trunk borers, mealybugs, and more can also cause issues for this tree. Occasionally, issues such as root rot, fruit drop, and crown gall can also arise.

Harvesting

The harvest time for Fuyu persimmon trees occurs relatively late in the season, often during October. As the harvest time arrives, you can notice which fruits are ready for picking based on visual cues.

A persimmon that is ready for harvest should be entirely orange. These fruits will also have a relatively firm texture compared to many fruits. Remember that these fruits can continue to ripen after harvest, meaning that you can store them and wait a while before enjoying the full effect of their texture and flavor.

Achieving maximum results

Growing a Fuyu persimmon tree that will produce a harvest of tasty fruits requires patience. These trees can take five years or more to begin blooming and fruiting. While you wait for that to occur, focus on giving your tree the ideal growing conditions. Full sunlight, good soil drainage, and a pH between 6.5 and 7.5 are the factors that have the greatest influence on your tree’s health.

Once your Fuyu persimmon tree begins fruiting, you may notice that its fruit production can vary. Often, this species will produce a larger harvest every other year.

FAQs

How tall does a Fuyu persimmon tree get?

At maturity, a Fuyu persimmon tree gets to be about 12 to 15 feet tall with a spread that is slightly smaller. However, at times these trees can surpass that estimated height and reach as much as 20 feet tall. It can take several years for Fuyu persimmon trees to reach their full size, as they have a moderate growth rate that can vary from 12 to 24 inches per year. Proper growth conditions will dictate how quickly your Fuyu persimmon tree develops.

Can Fuyu persimmon trees grow in pots?

Since Fuyu persimmon trees are relatively small compared to other trees, it's possible to grow them in containers. Container gardening for these trees is more likely to be successful while the tree is young and is still somewhat small. The larger your Fuyu persimmon tree grows, the more necessary it becomes to move it to a larger container or to an in-ground growing setting.

What do Fuyu persimmons taste like?

Part of what makes Fuyu persimmon trees so popular is that their fruit is quite unique in both taste and texture. People often struggle to accurately depict the taste of these fruits, frequently describing them as some combination of mango, peach, and other sweet flavors. The texture of these fruits is often akin to an apple or to a pear when they are slightly softer.
