The Meyer Lemon, Citrus x meyeri 'Improved,' is the happy result of combining a traditional lemon with a mandarin orange. The fruit is both tart and sweet, and can be used in a broad range of recipes that call for citrus fruit. Note that this cultivar is named 'Improved,' and that's for good reason. The original Meyer Lemon was susceptible to a fatal viral disease, but the new, improved version is virus-free, and easier to grow without any health challenges. Meyer Lemon Bush is easily grown in containers, so gardeners across the continental U.S. can appreciate this attractive and tasty cultivar. If that's not enough, here are a few more reasons to plant a Meyer Lemon Bush today:
- Provides fruit even if you only have a single bush.
- Ripens year-round, with winter being the best time to harvest lemons.
- Makes an attractive addition to garden settings with its handsome, dark-green foliage
Plant Care
Sunlight
The Meyer Lemon Bush will thrive when it receives full sun; it requires six or more hours of direct light a day.
Watering
Water your Meyer Lemon Bush 2 inches below the surface whenever the soil is dry.
Fertilizing
Regular applications of well-rotted compost or manure are adequate for feeding your Meyer Lemon Bush.
Planting and Care
Planting instructions
Site your Meyer Lemon Bush where it will get six hours or more of sun in well-drained soil. Unpot the bush and tease out any encircling roots, which can girdle the tree and slowly kill it. Dig a hole that’s as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. Place the bush in the hole with the roots spread out and, while holding it steady and upright, fill in around the roots with topsoil. Tamp down soil as you go to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of an organic mulch such as bark chips to conserve moisture and hinder weed growth.
Watering and nutrients
Newly-planted Meyer Lemon Bushes need to be watered every few days until new growth starts to come in. The bush should never be allowed to stand in water, however, as this can cause root rot. Water established Meyer Lemon Bushes when the soil 2 inches below the surface is dry. Fertilize by regularly adding organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to the soil, digging it in lightly.
Pollination
Meyer Lemons are self-fertile, which means that a single plant has both male and female reproductive organs. Bees and wind action work to pollinate the female flowers when your plant is outside. But if it’s an indoors, container-grown bush, you can help nature along. Use a cotton swab (like a Q-tip) or small paintbrush to move pollen by swirling it around the center of a flower and then moving on to the next one without washing off the brush. Repeat daily until every bloom has been treated.
Pruning
Prune your Meyer Lemon Bush in late winter, when it is finished producing fruit. Cut back weak or thin branches, or any that are rubbing against each other. Prune lightly for shape or to control height. Remove suckers as well, and any dead, damaged, or diseased limbs whenever you see them. To encourage growth, make all cuts at a 45-degree angle facing upwards.
Pests, diseases, and animals
Meyer Lemon bushes may experience common pests such as mealybugs, citrus scale insects, and aphids. If the infestation is light, just prune out the infected branches. Horticultural oil can also be used to control pests. Meyer Lemons may get fungal infections such as greasy spot, or bacterial diseases, including citrus blast. One of the best ways to help your bush fight these issues is to give it excellent care so that it is in robust health. Animals such as deer and rodents can also bother your Meyer Lemon Bush.
Harvesting
Your Meyer Lemon’s fruits are ready to harvest when they turn from green to a rich yellow with hints of orange. Harvest by hand, twisting the fruit off the branch with a quick turn of your wrist. Store the lemons in a cool place, where they should be fine for up to a week.
Achieving maximum results
If you are in the northern part of the U.S., you may think that the heat-loving Meyer Lemon Bush is off limits. But that’s not the case. These easy-care plants adapt beautifully to growing in containers. Keep your pot-grown Meyer Lemon outside in a sunny spot until your temperatures get near frost levels, then bring the plants indoors and place them in a window where they will get good sun. Container-grown plants need more water and food than those grown in the ground, and your Meyer Lemon will also benefit if you mist the leaves regularly and occasionally wipe them down with a soft cloth to eliminate dust and insects.
FAQs
How tall does a Meyer Lemon Bush get?
Where can I grow Meyer Lemon Bush outside?
Meyer Lemon Bush can be grown outside in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 8-11, which means the southern part of the country including Florida, much of Texas, coastal California, and the Pacific Northwest. In any area where the temperatures get down to 10 degrees, it should be grown in a container that can be brought inside during cold weather.
Is Meyer Lemon toxic?
The fruit is very safe for people to eat, and is quite tasty and easy to use in recipes. But the leaves are toxic to dogs, cats, and horses, and the plant should never be placed where it could be easily nibbled on by our animal friends.

Customer Reviews
So far so good, it's too early to tell how it will turn out
Great customer service
It is healthy but I wish it was a little bigger!
Both the lemon tree and lemon bush arrived in perfect condition. The bush already has 7 lemons; the tree needs to catch up! Both were secure and professionally packaged. Excellent notifications until both reached their final destination. Outstanding company. Highly recommend.
Overall, the tree was larger than expected. And I was surprised to see new healthy growth begin within one week of receiving. But, when it was delivered, one branch on tree had very light green/almost yellow leaves. Don't know what to do about this.
It is healthy and getting new leaves. FedEx damaged it and quite a few of the top branches were broken off.
A lot of the leaves were torn and shriveled. looks like some signs of insect damage or disease. A lot of the leaves have brown spotting and are misshaped. Giving it 4 stars because I believe there is still hope to get it healthy or keep it alive. Since I cannot identify the graft, I am hoping dwarf stock is being used and that I do not have a cutting or air layered tree. Glad I got the insurance, I highly recommend it.
Very well packaged. The leaves are falling off, but perhaps that is normal? I'm thinking I should repot it.
I bought two of these Meyer Lemon Bush plants, and they both arrived in identical outer packages. One of them had firmly packed soil and is absolutely thriving. The other had much looser soil that didn't really want to hold water, and does not appear to be doing well at all, despite the same treatment as the other plant. I've replanted them both. We'll see! It might just be travel shock. Not giving up on it yet :)
Great. This is 2nd Meyer Lemon I've bought from you.
It came looking green and healthy but is much smaller than the picture. Hoping for good results! Thank you!
I ordered the Lemon Bush and two other Citrus Trees and they arrived very healthy and will remain on mt deck through the rest of the growing season.
The Lemon Bush came and planted it right away, it was very healthy. Can't wait till it grows and I can get some lemons.
We ordered the plants, the lemon bush and an avocado tree for my husband. He was surprised and delighted. He has tried to contact you with some questions via email and got no response. His email is [email protected]
The plant looked rough when we got it, and my husband repotted it. It is coming along now.
Tree came bigger than expected and in really good health. Is growing fast. Loved the way it came packaged.
I received the plant with damage to a couple of leaves. I took pictures if you need to see it. The tree is tall and lanky. Hopefully pruning it will have it at the desired shape I want it to be. Like a bush not like a tree! Overall i am excited to grow this meyer from your shop. I had a couple of these in the past (2 years now) and have only seen 3-4 lemons on the tree. I guess i needed to learn a little more about growing lemons in containers. I hope this will turn out fruitful. I envy those that show high yields and I really want that!!
wish i could afford two
Good communication and shopping. Tree very healthy
Excellent so far
Plant arrived in excellent condition!
The lemon bush arrived intact and planted as advertised. Not as "bushy" as I was expecting, a single tall stem instead, but I am sure that will change over time.
I purchased two, one came in beat up the other in perfect condition, however both are thriving one month later.
So far it's lovely
I have only had the bush for a few weeks, and it is really thriving. I can't wait to get some lemons
My Meyer lemon arrived in perfect condition. Cleaver way of shipping so pot doesn't move in shipment. It arrived with new growth starting, now a little over a month later, it has about 10" of new growth so far. It's happy and growing like a weed. Super healthy stock, so glad I ordered!
Company was great and the Meyer lemon bush I received has grown 6" already. Very pleased
I bought a Glen mango tree a few weeks ago, but unfortunately, it completely dried all the leaves and the stem dried. I had purchased insurance, and when I called Customer Service they sent a new plant the next day. Hoping that this one will survive.
