Tiny Tower® Thuja for Sale - Buying & Growing Guide
The Tiny Tower® Thuja, Thuja x 'MonRig' P.P.A.F., is a tremendously versatile and easy to care for small tree that can fill many roles in the garden. It is well-suited for use as a hedge, windscreen or privacy fence, and will fill in to create a thick green wall if planted in staggered rows. But, it's also attractive enough to stand on its own as a specimen or foundation planting, and its narrow width means it can be planted relatively close to your home or other structures. The Tiny Tower® is an offshoot of the classic Green Giant Thuja, but it is a slower grower with finer foliage that holds its shape better than its parent. As a bonus, this cultivar turns an attractive bronze in the fall, holding that color through to spring, when the foliage once more becomes a vibrant green. Here are a few more reasons to consider planting this bold new tree in your garden:
- As an evergreen, it provides four seasons of interest in the garden or landscape.
- It's well-suited to growing in containers, where it will remain at a manageable height.
- Needs no pruning or extra care.

Plant Care
Sunlight
The Tiny Tower® Thuja grows best in full sun, six or more hours of direct sunlight a day.
Watering
Water new trees once or twice a week; established plants will only need water in very dry conditions.
Fertilizing
Fertilize in spring with a balanced, slow-release product designed for evergreen trees and shrubs.
Planting and Care
Planting instructions
Site your thuja where it will receive at least six hours of sunlight a day in soil that drains well. If you are planting multiples as a hedge, space them 2 to 3 feet apart. Unpot your sapling and tease out any encircling roots, which can girdle the tree and slowly kill it. Dig a hole that’s as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. Place the tree in the hole, spreading out the roots. Holding it upright and steady, fill in around the roots with topsoil, tamping down as you go to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly. Apply a two to three-inch layer of organic mulch such as bark chips around the root zone to conserve moisture and hinder weed growth but keep it from touching the trunk to avoid problems with rot.
Watering and nutrients
For its first growing season, water your thuja once or twice a week — more if you’re experiencing very hot or dry conditions. Once the tree is established, by its second year, it shouldn’t need supplemental watering unless you’re experiencing drought-like conditions. Fertilize your tree in spring, using a slow-release, balanced product designed for evergreen trees and shrubs. It will also appreciate a layer of well-rotted compost or manure applied to the root zone once a year.
Pollination
As an evergreen, the Tiny Tower® Thuja has cones instead of flowers as their means of reproduction. Pollen is carried and distributed by the wind.
Pruning
The Tiny Tower® Thuja needs no regular pruning. Monitor the tree and remove any dead, diseased or damaged limbs whenever you see them. You should not need to shape the tree — it will naturally assume a pyramidal shape on its own.
Pests and diseases
The Tiny Tower® Thuja is not prone to any diseases or insect pests in general; so, you are unlikely to see signs of damage on your tree. Occasionally, there may be bagworms, mealybugs or spider mites, but a healthy tree should be able to fend off infestations on its own. Thujas are sturdy trees, and you will only rarely see signs of diseases such as canker or leaf blight. If you see signs of needle blight (browned foliage), trim and discard affected foliage or branches, and apply a fungicide.
Achieving maximum results
One way to achieve maximum results with your Tiny Tower® Thuja is to consider using it as a container plant. If grown in the soil, this thuja can reach heights of 18 to 20 feet, but a container-grown specimen will probably max out at about six feet, making it the perfect size for a deck or flanking a front entryway. Choose a container that is about twice the size of the root ball, with suitable drainage holes in the bottom. Use a good-quality potting mix, and plant as per our directions above. Keep in mind that plants grown in containers may need more regular watering than those grown in the soil and fertilize regularly as per package directions to ensure strong growth.
FAQs
Where can I grow a Tiny Tower® Thuja
This sturdy cultivar grows well throughout most of the continental U.S. and is hardy down to -10 degrees Fahrenheit, which corresponds with USDA hardiness zones five through nine. It grows well as far north as coastal Maine, and in the south can be grown in all but the southernmost semi-tropical portions of Florida.
How big does this thuja get?
Unlike its parent, the Green Giant Thuja — which can grow to a height of 50 feet — the Tiny Tower® Thuja maxes out at a mature height of 18 to 20 feet, with a corresponding width of four to five feet. This vertical orientation makes it an excellent choice for planting in tight spaces or near a foundation. It is a slow grower and will take a decade or more to reach its maximum height.
How is the Tiny Tower® Thuja best used in my landscape?
This thuja's most obvious use is as a hedge, and it excels in that use. However, it's capable of much more. Consider adding several to an Asian-themed garden to add height and elegance. Use it near the back of a mixed perennial border, or plant it near a colorful crape myrtle, where its dark foliage will contrast nicely with the crape myrtle's flowers. If grown in a container, it will look splendid, grouped around a pool or in the corner of a deck surrounded by smaller container-grown foliage plants.
